Summer Orgo Refresher (links updated 08/28/06)

I still can't update our class webpage so I will continue to link files via Chemblog! May blogger.com always maintain consciousness! If this site ever fails, then check edline.com for updates. Note: I updated the link for the college chem telecourse (from the "MustSeeAPTV" listing below). The site was removed but I found a link on the amazing "internet archive".
As cited in the Summer Assignment letter, here are some organic chem review sheets. When naming and identifying different types of organic compounds is second nature to you, you will gain some easy points on the AP exam.
Characteristics of Organic Compounds + Hydrocarbons
Answers to Characteristics of Organic Compounds + Hydrocarbons
Organic Functional Groups
Hydrocarbon Derivatives

Orgo Practice Test

The above files are also linked to edline.com BUT you first must be logged on to edline.com to obtain the files.
The AP Chem course assumes mastery of the information in the above worksheets/tests from one's first-year chemistry course.

Perfect 10!!!

It's official. I happily congratulate the 10 members of the AP Chem Class of 2006!
I just received notice of the AP score report and ALL TEN of you got a 5.
I am very proud of you and I appreciate the great effort that you made. I'm glad that you all earned a few college credits, too.
Continued success to you in your senior year @ St. Anthony's or in your freshman year of college!

The server that contains our website files isn't letting me in right now so, as mentioned in the assignment letter, I will post the Summer Assignment CollegeBoard Objectives and the Chemistry Regents files on Edline (i.e. Plan B). Here are the links (update: for these links to work you have to be logged into edline):
Unit 1 Objectives
Unit 2 and 3 Objectives
Summer Assignment Chemistry Regents Exam
Reference Tables for Chemistry Regents Exam
The above links should work but I also uploaded the files to what may be one of the greatest resources ever: the INTERNET ARCHIVE!

more results...
I haven't yet viewed the full AP score report but the tally is now at (drum roll):
Seven scores reported: seven FIVES !!! Boo-yah!!!
If I set my alarm clock one of these days, I will get the rest of the results from school. I'm elated about the results so far and I'm looking forward to finding out the rest of the story. I was also glad to hear about two more SAT II scores from sophomores: 780 and 800! That's a LOT of sophos and very little moros.

MustSeeAPTV!
Welcome AP Chem Class of 2006-7! To assist you with your summer assignment, I'm posting a link to an online college chemistry class from Texas A&M . There are 10 lectures on this link and they coincide closely with the chapters in your textbook.
The first five lectures cover the material on the summer assignment.
Each lecture takes about 45 minutes, so, between watching reruns of "Grey's Anatomy", you can check out an episode of college chem. If you don't have the RealOne Player which you use to view the videos, you can download it for free here. The professor, Dr. Larry Brown, gears the course slightly towards engineering majors but the course is really pure general chemistry. He even does some cool demos during the lectures! You can even skip to different parts of the lecture, which is divided into ten minute segments.
As you will see throughout our course, I will regularly post links that may be helpful to you.
Enjoy!

GREAT NEWS trickling in...

Thanks to those who have shared the fantastic news of their awesomely high achievement.
The latest:
In AP, two students have reported FIVES (in EACH of their subject tests including CHEM)! HUZZAH AND GOOD DAY!
In Honors, more scores in the 700's including a 790!!!(an all-time high for a 1st-year chem student!)
I'll expect a call from News 12 and the Commissioner of Ed. any day now! I may have to start the "Ultra-Achievement Awards" (the Ciccies or Sickies-haha) to honor the CREAM OF WHEAT of the wheat (no chaff in here!).

Antici................pation

SLOW DOWN SUMMER...I wish that June had about 40 days.
Well, now that July is here, I eagerly await the forthcoming AP scores. I hope that they are as lofty as the Regents grades were. The word from the graders @ Clemson University was that the cutoff for a 5 was even higher this year than last year because the average score per Part II questions was relatively high.
You may call the ETS for your scores tomorrow, 07/01/06, ($10) or they will arrive in the mail within the next ten days (most likely).
The new circle of AP life begins soon as I will mail out the summer assignment letters within the next two weeks. Lots of stuff to reinforce and some new info to learn.
Thanks to those of you who have told me your Chem SAT II scores! So far, we are all above 700 and mostly in the 720 to 740 range. That is great especially for first year chem students.
Have a Happy 4th of July! Enjoy the fireworks and liquid nitrogen.
